Being a DJ is a lifestyle according to Hill, also known as DJ Color TV, who has made music curation and turntablism his vocation for the past 20+ years across the globe. Juxtaposed with reflections on his career so far, Hill takes on another challenging gig for the first time: a private birthday party on a Manhattan rooftop in the form of a silent disco – where the crowd dances to music only they can hear.

Compared to the usual parties from his homebase in New York City to numerous cities across Europe and Asia, Hill shares his expertise and experience rocking different types of crowds with sounds ranging from boom bap hip-hop to electronic dance music. Making connections, adapting to technology and finding work in the gig economy is all part of the job for Hill – until COVID-19 and city-wide shutdowns across the US upend his groove entirely.

From emerging filmmaker and music geek Casey Yugo, this documentary short film examines DJ culture and musical experience through the biographical and day-to-day lens of a certified New York City party rocker — whether through loud speaker or headphones.

What sounds better to you? The collective vibrations of a club’s loud speakers or the laissez-faire indulgence of headphones at a silent disco? Are you the song selector or a patron? Is it better to socialize or to dance? Watch the documentary and decide for yourself.
